University of Utah Medical Students Continue the Hope Alliance Tradition with Fundraising Dinner

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—January 24, 2006—For the fourth straight year, medical students from the University of Utah are joining with The Hope Alliance, a Salt Lake City-based non-profit, to organize one of the city’s premier fundraising dinners.  This year, on January 26, at 7:00 p.m., the University of Utah medical student chapter of the Hope Alliance will host 200 business leaders, medical professionals, interested community members, and friends and family at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the artsy new addition on the south side of the campus.

“These students are amazing,” beams Dr. David Morton, an anatomy professor for the School of Medicine and faculty advisor for the students.  “Every year they somehow squeeze countless hours of fundraising and several weeks of volunteer work in Peru into their already jammed schedule.”  On top of medical school loans, student participants are expected to pay their way to the site in Peru.  Generous donations from groups such as XanGo, IHC, Blue Cross, Envirocare of Utah and other donors allow for travel and medications for the people of Iquitos, Peru, the annual site of charity’s efforts.

Featured speakers for the evening will be University of Utah President Michael Young, followed by Richard Paul Evans, author of The Christmas Box and organizer of many humanitarian efforts including an orphanage in Peru.  Dr. John Hanrahan, founder of Hope Alliance will close the evening with an inspirational message.  In addition, attendees will be able to bid on thousands of dollars of community-donated items during the silent auction.  Items include a round of orthodontic care (braces) to a getaway package to St George or Snowbird.
