Peru: Medical Expeditions to Rural Areas

For the past four years, XanGo has joined with Hope Alliance to support an annual medical expedition to the jungles of Iquitos Peru.  Inhabitants travel for miles—often by canoe—from neighboring villages with their children to obtain checkups, assistance and treatment from first and second-year University of Utah medical students. Doctors David Morton, Fred Templeman, and Vaughn Johnson donate their time to travel to Peru with the group, accompanied by Spanish-speaking XanGo staff members who serve as translators. Many of the health-related issues the villagers face have to do with the dirty drinking water. Lack of clean water can cause serious health problems including debilitating dehydration.  XanGo helped install purified water systems and promoted health education within the rural community.  In addition to providing medical services for those who do not have access to care, XanGo distributors, executives and employees helped build schools, school desks, and bookshelves for neighboring villages.
